So sometimes I cant decide if I am living on another planet or if I have simply gone to hell...
The lizard was nothing compared to what I killed yesterday...If the Paraguayans (a) dont know its name in Spanish (only Guarani) and (b) THEY are afraid to go near it, you know its bad.

So I was raking my weekly 100 kilogram pile of leaves to burn when my 11 year old sister Noelia comes over and informs me that there is a snake in my kitchen. I didnt believe her because she wasnt hysterical. But then she screamed ¨Jenny! Tu gato esta jugando con la visboa!¨ So I went to look in my kitchen and lo and behold my cat was playing with what appeared to be a pretty large snake. So I did some screaming. I rescued my cat by luring him out with some food. And the snake thing appeared to be dead. So no one would help me and I started screaming in English how much I love Paraguay. I think something in me snapped. I grabbed a broom and (screaming) swept it out of my kitchen. Still screaming at it in English I grabbed a shovel and cut it into 3 pieces (and took photos of it too to show you all). Habia sido...not a snake. They call it a kuvuja I believe. An underground dwelling parasite essentially. A big fucking worm. With two heads, no tail, really long and FAT. Even after being chopped into three pieces it continued to move. But the chickens ate it. So now I dont have to look at it anymore. And apparently I might die before the year ends. They kept yelling at me not to kill it because its bad luck. I screamed that ¨es MALA SUERTE que esta en mi cocina!¨ But regardless I guess I should take advantage of the next three months and enjoy myself...I might not see January. Theres a likely possibility in my mind. This country is going to kill me.

So nerves shot I went on to fall really hard bruising my legs severely. I found two frogs (and lacked the energy to chase them so there they are still, one in my bathroom, one in my kitchen) and I killed two BIG poisonous spiders by my bed. All yesterday. Maybe thats why I woke up at 4.00 this morning and couldnt sleep anymore. That or the diahrrea.

PS. Going to Asuncion for a little vacation in the city Thursday through Saturday.

Oh and for the record...one month without running water. And they are estimating we will wait one more month ¨mas o menos¨

So I killed the biggest lizard Ive ever seen in my life yesterday. I stoned him to death. I felt bad afterwards.

I invited the nurse from town came to my community and she did a talk on STIs, AIDS, birth control methods, etc Wednesday. She also gave free Pap smears. I recently discussed with the principal of the elementary school the fact that the 5th and 6th graders have AIDS and STIs in their curriculum but the teachers either dont want to talk about it or the students just giggle and we decided that if a nurse or doctor comes in, theyll listen. So I talked the nurse into coming back next week to talk to the kids.

The elementary school is having their annual festival to raise money on October 9th. I was volunteered to help make 400 empanadas to sell. Que fun. Also the principal appointed me judge of the competition for queen of the school. Im not sure how I feel about that. I really need to avoid pissing off people. And I have a feeling that whoever I dont choose for queen will not be too thrilled with the Americana. But it should be fun. Afterwards its a big fiesta with drinking and dancing. I love that all school fundraisers involve selling beer.

Im going to a concert with a bunch of my friends from my community. A Columbian soap opera singer is coming to town. My host mom agreed that I can chaperone my sisters (who are 17 and 18) plus the new boy wants me to go like as his date or something. Oy. I swear I am not going to marry a Paraguayan.

I really dont have too much exciting news. One of my hibiscus plants looks like its going to bloom finally. Im going to be a godmother for my neighbor Patricia when she does her Confirmation this month. My dog hasnt killed anything yet. Im causing interfamily rivalry by being friends with 2 families that hate each other. Which is a bad idea and is causing or will soon cause mucho gossip. During the day its getting hotter and hotter, but nights are still chilly. I sunbathed for 2.5 hours on Wednesday so I got a little more color (my amazing tan from last summer has faded) they think Im sooo weird for wanting to be tan. I made french toast last night for dinner. My family thinks Im the most amazing chef ever.

I came into town today to send Jess birthday greetings. And buy wine to smuggle back to my house (dont need anybody calling me a borracha).

ciao.

I would like to mention first that it is still officially "winter" in Paraguay and it was 97 degrees today. Yes that's right. 97. I take back all previous complaints about using electric blankets at night. I love it that the Paraguayans are telling me that this is gonna be a hot summer. Apparently 107 in the shade last February isn't what is considered hot. But I haven't seen Dec/Jan...that's when it's really "bad." I will die here.

Also it should be noted that for the past 10 days my community has been without running water. Yes, I am in Peace Corps and I came prepared to live 2 years without agua corriente. But wow it sucks... I don't have a well at my house so I have to carry buckets and buckets and buckets from my host family's well. After the second day, it stopped bothering me to drink a glass of water with dirt and other unknown particles floating in it. Its kinda ironic to take bucket baths with dirty water though. My intestines are still feeling ok though so hopefully I did not contract any worms. Vamos a ver.

I'm in a training session all week in Asuncion. I'm sad to be away from my dog and kitten. But its great to see everyone and speak some good ol' English.

Send me a letter and I'll send you one.
Miss you (and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups...)!
